According to several reports, including ABC, The New York Times, and PIX 11, which quote police sources, UnitedHealth Group CEO Brian Thompson was shot and killed in Manhattan on Wednesday, December 4, in front of the Hilton hotel.
Officers found a 50-year-old man who had been shot in the chest after responding to a report at approximately 6:40 a.m. in front of the New York Hilton Midtown, located at 1335 Sixth Avenue, according to a spokesman for the New York Police Department who spoke to PEOPLE.
Following his transfer to the hospital, the victim was declared dead. Although Thompson has been identified as the victim in a number of reports, the spokesperson stated that the victim's identity is being kept secret until family members are notified.
The Times, which examined a police report, stated that the shooter fled east on Sixth Avenue and that authorities are still looking for him.
The company's website states that Thompson was appointed CEO in April 2021. He had previously served as the CEO of the business's government initiatives, such as its Medicare program.
According to his bio, he started working for the company in 2004.
