Tom Jarrel, a renowned former ABC News correspondent and anchor who covered the White House and other high-profile topics, passed away. On Thursday, October 24, 2024, Jarriel's family made the announcement of his passing. He was eighty-nine.
His three boys and his 57-year marriage to Joan are his surviving family members. Jarriel spent an incredible 48 years working with ABC News before becoming well-known. When he first joined in 1964, he covered US Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford as a White House correspondent.
After two years of co-hosting ABC Evening News on Saturdays in 1977, Jarriel became an investigative correspondent for the network's news magazine 20/20 in 1979. Transportation accidents, unnecessary defence spending, and other topics were discussed.
Two of his most influential pieces on "20/20" were a series of exposes on the misery of children in Romanian orphanages and a report on female military personnel who claim they were sexually assaulted and raped while serving their country.
He received ten Emmy Awards for his efforts on the show, which was highly praised by critics. After working for the network for decades, Jarriel retired in 2002.
