On December 2, 2024, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II's entourage was violently attacked while returning from a burial in Nkoranza, raising tensions in Techiman. Several people, including a kid, were hurt in the incident. As the buses transported Otumfuo's convoy passed through Techiman, the incident took place.
The attack was purportedly retaliatory for a previous incident in which the Asanteman caravan reportedly screamed aggressive slogans and blocked the route near Amamfom. According to reports, this action infuriated several young people in Techiman who had previously vowed to attack route users.
Stones were thrown at the caravan, breaking windows and injuring multiple passengers, according to eyewitnesses who reported the chaotic scene. One of the casualties was a kid who was treated among other victims. Thankfully, no fatalities have been recorded, although it's still unknown how serious the injuries are.
The Manhyia Palace released a statement refuting footage that went viral that claimed Otumfuo's convoy had been attacked personally. They asked people to ignore the false information.
Tensions between the Techiman and Nkoranza populations have increased as a result of this concerning incident. Now, officials are attempting to defuse the conflict and stop it from getting worse.
