The employees of the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) have received a strong warning not to take part in the countrywide walkout that organised labour has called for from Board Chairman Isaac Amoo.

During a staff gathering on Wednesday, October 9, at GMet's Accra headquarters, Mr. Amoo issued a warning, saying that any worker who skips work in accordance with the strike order should "consider themselves sacked."

He underlined how vital the agency's operations are to maintaining national security, particularly in terms of supplying weather data needed by industries like emergency services, aviation, and agriculture. His admonition arrives just a few hours before the countrywide walkout, which is set to start on Thursday, October 10, 2024.

Arrangement The strike was called by Labour and its affiliated unions in an effort to put pressure on the government to act decisively against "galamsey," or illicit mining.

The walkout is a part of a larger demand that the government proclaim a state of emergency and take action to stop Galamsey's environmental devastation, which has resulted in widespread contamination of the nation's forest reserves and water bodies.

Mr. Amoo urged the employees to put their work before the strike, stressing the value of the Ghana Meteorological Agency's role in protecting people and property through accurate weather forecasts.

“GMET is part of the essential services of this country. So, on behalf of the board and leadership of this agency, I want to announce to you that GMET does not approve any of its workers to join the nationwide strike, and any worker who will flout the directive should consider himself or herself as having terminated his or her appointment,” he stated.
