In an effort to improve vehicle identification in Ghana, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) is getting ready to introduce a new digital number plate system. The DVLA will start a pilot scheme on August 1, 2026, primarily concentrating on government cars.
On September 1, 2026, all
unregistered vehicles will be included. The two-year re-registration process
for all vehicles is scheduled to run from January 1, 2027, to December 31,
2028, according to DVLA CEO Julius Neequaye Kotey.
By connecting the car
database with important organizations including the police, the courts, and the
National Insurance Commission, this project aims to improve efficiency and
security. Mr. Kotey underlined that this update will enable the DVLA to give law
enforcement immediate information, preventing needless delays in court
procedures like bail.
Additionally, onboarding
cars to this digital network will authenticate legal ownership and ensure that
all taxes have been paid. Officials cautioned that if cars are not onboarded,
owners may face penalties since they will not be able to get the required
titles or registration cards. This important modernization endeavor is being
pushed to be supported by stakeholders and driving unions.
