The first squad
of firefighters arrived on the scene barely four minutes later, at 1:21 a.m.,
after the GNFS got the emergency call at 1:17 a.m.
Seven fire
engines were sent out from strategic locations throughout the city, including
Ministries, Circle, National Headquarters, Abelemkpe, Accra City, the Regional
Headquarters Substation, and Legon. A
GNFS water tanker and two other tankers from the Ablekuma Municipal Assembly
and Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) provided support.
Several stores that sold hardware and wooden planks
were destroyed in the fire, but it was finally put out after hours of fierce
firefighting. The fire was completely
put out at 11:44 a.m., after being contained at 6:26 a.m. and brought under
control by 6:37 a.m.
Two
firefighters were hurt during the operation; one was shocked by electricity,
while the other was burnt on the left arm.
After receiving treatment, both were released, and their conditions are
said to be stable.
The Ayalolo
cluster of schools and other surrounding facilities were spared from the fire
thanks to the prompt reaction.
Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sapong, the acting chief fire
officer, came to the scene to evaluate the damage and give her officers
encouragement. ACFO II Rashid Kwame
Nisawu, the Greater Accra Regional Commander; ACFO II Osmond Anum, the Deputy
Director of Operations; and other senior officials who managed coordination
joined her.
While
investigations are being conducted to determine the cause of the fire, the GNFS
has complimented all assisting authorities for their cooperation.
