Recently, irate youths overran Asanko Gold Mines' mining facilities in the Manso neighborhood of Ghana's Ashanti Region. Deadly battles between local youth groups and military officers preceded the upheaval. Residents accused the military of murdering locals during a struggle over mining concessions, which sparked the conflict. The young people responded by demolishing earth-moving and mining equipment as a way to vent their outrage at the deaths.
