Ghana and Ukraine Forge New Strategic Partnership

Ghana and Ukraine are planning to strengthen their relationship with an emphasis on agriculture and technology. Presidents John Dramani Mahama of Ghana and Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine had a fruitful meeting on July 11, 2025. Zelenskyy discussed the conversation's specifics on X, emphasizing their common desire for collaboration. The main topics of discussion were developing a food logistics hub and advancing Ghana's agro-industrial sector. Ghana wants to lower post-harvest losses and improve food security. The nation, which is a significant producer of cocoa, cassava, and maize, has issues like inadequate infrastructure, climate change, and a lack of modern farming tools.

Ghana might establish itself as a major agricultural hub in West Africa by developing a logistical hub. This proposal builds on previous discussions at the 2024 World Economic Forum in Davos between Zelenskyy and former Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo. Ghana's interest in Ukraine's drone technology was a major topic of the most recent conversation. Ukraine has emerged as a world leader in drone manufacturing since Russia's 2022 invasion. Millions of affordable drones for electronic warfare, strikes, and reconnaissance have been created under its "Army of Drones" programme. Drones are useful for surveillance and defence because some of them can go more than 1,000 kilometers.

Ghana believes it can improve its border security by utilizing Ukraine's experience. In addition to problems like human trafficking and cross-border crime, the nation is threatened by extremist organizations in the Sahel. Zelenskyy stated that Ghana is prepared to provide funding for the manufacture of drones in Ukraine. Ukraine will assist Ghana in securing its borders in exchange. Ghana's financial pledge demonstrates how urgently it must confront regional insecurity. Both leaders decided to meet at the ministerial level shortly in order to proceed.

To finalize agreements and establish deadlines, a Ukrainian delegation will travel to Ghana. Since establishing diplomatic relations in 1992, the two countries have a history of strengthening their relationship. Ghana has denounced Russia's aggression and backed Ukraine's sovereignty. In December 2023, Ukraine demonstrated its commitment to African partnerships by opening an embassy in Accra. In June 2025, both nations also decided to work together on digital technology and cybersecurity.

Zelenskyy extended an invitation to President Mahama to come to Ukraine as a gesture of goodwill. Their collaboration may be further strengthened by this visit. Through the partnership, Ghana will benefit from cutting-edge technology and agricultural expansion, and Ukraine will gain a valuable African ally.
