Christabel Afornorfe, a 31-year-old bar owner, and Theodora Kornu, a 19-year-old shop assistant, were found guilty by the Hohoe Magistrate Court of selling expired drinks and operating in unhygienic conditions. During the court proceedings, which were presided over by relieving judge Mr. Lambert Y. Keriba, both parties entered guilty pleas to the charges.

While Kornu was sentenced to sign a three-year bond of good behavior, Afornorfe was forced to pay a fine of GHS 600 or serve a month in jail. During a regular inspection on July 14, sanitary inspectors found illegal waste disposal and expired beverages behind Christabel Pub and Bar Ltd., Environmental Health Analyst Mr. Daniel Dotse Eklo told the court. Furthermore, neither person had a current medical certificate of fitness to offer consumable goods.

A follow-up examination on July 22 found that the operators had not complied with government notices and educational guidelines to address the health issues. In order to safeguard the public's health, inspectors seized the expired commodities and cautioned unknowing consumers that such risky activities put them at great risk for food poisoning and waterborne illnesses, including cholera and typhoid fever.
