Nine Chinese nationals involved in illicit mining in the
Western Region's Wassa Akropong area have been taken into custody by the
National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS).
The team arrested two females and seven males who were
actively participating in the activity during an operation that took place
between August 5 and August 7, 2025.
During the operation, four excavators were taken and are
being held by the police. On-site, further tools and equipment that were
recovered from the suspects were destroyed.
To aid in investigations and enable additional action, the
detained individuals have been turned over to the Ghana Immigration Service and
taken to NAIMOS headquarters.
Since its founding in March 2025, NAIMOS has increased the
number of arrests and equipment seizures, and this operation adds to that
total.
As part of the government's assault on illicit mining, the
Secretariat, which is the only agency responsible for coordinating all
anti-illegal mining actions, has been conducting targeted, intelligence-led
raids under the direction of its Director of Operations.
In keeping with its pledge to stop galamsey, clean up
contaminated waterways, and recover lands that have been destroyed by illicit
mining, NAIMOS said it will carry on with its efforts in the Amenfi and Wassa
regions.
