Monday, December 2, 2024, saw hundreds of protesters, led by Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom, take to the streets in a large-scale demonstration as part of the ongoing "Bring Back GN Bank" campaign, filling the Central Region's streets with emotion.
Participants from a variety of backgrounds voiced their dissatisfaction with GN Bank's failure and demanded that it be reopened in order to help local companies and create jobs. Protesters marched across a few of Elmina's main streets during the rally.
Concerns were voiced by several protesters on what they called a "betrayal of trust" by the government and traditional authority. They conveyed their dissatisfaction with the Elmina traditional council's leadership.
Groupe Nduom and GN Bank founder Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom addressed the audience and voiced his displeasure with the events that resulted in the bank's demise in 2019. "The collapse of GN Bank was not just about regulations," he said, criticising the bank's closure decision.
It was a deliberate assault against Ghanaian creativity and enterprise. However, I'm still holding out hope that a new government will recognise the benefits of reviving the People's Bank.
Dr. Nduom underlined how the closing of GN Bank affected rural communities and small companies, where the bank was essential in offering easily accessible financial services. "GN Bank's restoration is about more than just me," he continued. It's about giving our local companies and citizens optimism and confidence again.
The Elmina demonstration is a component of a larger national effort that has seen comparable gatherings all throughout the nation with the goal of enlisting public support and highlighting the bank's noteworthy achievements prior to the revocation of its license.
The trip is far from done, Dr. Nduom said, expressing optimism about the bank's possible reinstatement. We will be successful if the public supports us.
