An Irish former rugby player was convicted of rape in France

Denis Coulson, a former rugby player for Ireland U20, was found guilty of raping a woman in Bordeaux, France, in 2017 and was given a 14-year prison sentence.

Two former Irish international rugby players were condemned on Friday in Bordeaux's Cour d'Assises, including Dublin-born Coulson, who previously played for Connacht and French team Stade Français.

Chris Farrell, who was born in Fermanagh and played for Ireland in the 2018 Six Nations Grand Slam, received a four-year sentence with two years suspended for failing to prevent a crime.

The court was informed that although he would not be imprisoned, he would need to stay in France and wear an electronic tag for two years.

Along with three other rugby players, two of whom were also convicted of rape on Friday, the two men were on trial. The five men used to play together for FC Grenoble.

Frenchman Loick Jammes, 30, was convicted of rape and sentenced to 14 years in prison.

New Zealander Rory Grice, 34, received a 12-year term after being convicted guilty of rape.

Dylan Hayes, 30, a fellow New Zealander, received a two-year suspended sentence for failing to prevent a crime.

The accusations had been refuted by each of the five defendants.
