The Media Coalition Against Galamsey has said that it will support organised labour's indefinite strike scheduled to start on October 10, 2024, by holding a "red band" protest against unlawful mining. Kenneth Ashigbey, the Coalition's convener, disclosed this on Wednesday, October 9, during an interview with Citi FM in Accra.
He clarified that the goal of the demonstration is to raise awareness of the government's lack of response to requests for an outright ban on illicit mining and to pressure it to act more forcefully to address the galamsey situation. In order to demonstrate unity, protesters are urged to tie red bands to automobiles, motorcycles, and bicycles, as well as wear red bands on their heads or arms.
Furthermore, supporters are encouraged to use the hashtags #StopGalamseyNow, #SaveOurLand, and #SaveOurFuture while posting images and videos of their participation on social media.
The Coalition asked Ghanaians to keep up the protests forever until the government took strong action to end illegal mining in a public statement.
